Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

I have a dear friend, Geri, who completely transformed her life in a year.  When I asked her how she did it, she told me her secret:

 

“I got more comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

 

If you met my friend today, the first thing you’d notice is that she glows – from the inside out.

 

One year ago it was a very different story.

 

In the fall of 2016, Geri was like so many people I know – raising kids, working hard, drinking a little too much wine on the weekends and feeling a bit sad all the time.  Geri was full of regret about choices she did or didn’t make in the past.  Her dreams were dusty and she felt dusty too.

 

She grew sick and tired of feeling stuck.  She dug down deep and found the courage to do something she thought she could never do.

 

She joined a kick-boxing gym.

 

When Geri showed up at the gym, she was nervous.  It felt risky and daring to put herself into a new and unfamiliar environment.  What if she looked silly?  What if she couldn’t keep up?  After all, exercise wasn’t Geri’s “thing” and she wasn’t in great shape.  Besides, what does one wear when kickboxing?  She didn’t have a clue.

 

She showed up anyway.

 

Turns out the instructors were nice, and it felt good to kick and punch things.  After a few sessions, Geri began to look forward to getting to the gym for class.  She started to feel more positive about her body and her energy improved.  Geri was proud of herself.

 

Taking this risk (and surviving it) led to her ability to tolerate another risk, and then another, and another ... She gradually became more daring

and that is when the REAL magic happened:

 

She became more comfortable trying new things.

 

Over the course of a year, Geri’s life began to unfold in new and delightful ways.  She volunteered for a charity she loves and went on adventurous trips that brought her great joy.  She made new friends, and she attracted positive, influential people into her life.  She showed up differently at the office and found more peace of mind at work.  Her confidence grew exponentially.

 

One year ago my friend Geri felt stuck and unhappy.  Today she’s an inspiration to others, all because she left her comfort zone.  If she can do it, you can too.

 

If you feel stuck, start with one thing that scares you a little bit, and celebrate that you’ve allowed yourself to be vulnerable in this way. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger…and braver.

 

Turns out one of the best things you can do for yourself is to get comfortable being uncomfortable.
